Working on the reduction gearbox was insightful to say the least. I gained practical experience in the shop, extending my knowledge
on mechanical systems and the effect of parameters and goals on design philosphy. Created several calculation models, experimenting with performance of various ratios and shaft spline designs. Compared to the previous year, the reduction ratio was increased from 5.3 to 6.7. The purpose of the
gearbox was to increase the baseline torque of our Kohler engine which only outputted around 10 hp. The actual transmission was done using a belt
driven CVT (Countinuous Variable Transmission).
